After many years of teaching in a range of schools including high performing, internationally recognised schools, I am able to offer a tailored support programme for your child. It is important for me to find out what barriers to learning and progress they are facing and what their aspirations are. So I would always want to begin the process of support with a phonecall with yourself and the student. Drop me a message and let’s begin the process of ensuring your young person has the support they need to achieve their best.

I have extensive experience across all major examination boards, both as a classroom teacher and as an examiner. This gives me a deep understanding of exam requirements, mark schemes, and the strategies students need to achieve top grades.

Over the years, I have successfully supported students in improving by as many as four grades through focused teaching, tailored revision strategies, and clear academic guidance.

I provide structured support, honest feedback, and personalised direction to help each student build confidence, strengthen subject knowledge, and maximise their potential. If you are committed to putting in the effort, I will support, guide, and challenge you to achieve your very best.

The Synoptic Essay

This programme is designed for Year 12 and Year 13 students studying AQA A-level Biology who are aiming for A or A* grades, particularly those who feel stuck in the mid-mark range and are struggling to translate their knowledge into high-scoring essay responses. It is especially effective for students who understand the content but need a clear, structured approach to improve their essay technique and consistently access top-band marks.

As a former Sixth Form Tutor and Assistant Head of Sixth Form, I have extensive experience supporting students through the UCAS application process. A key part of my role involved guiding students with university applications, personal statements, course choices, and interview preparation, including applications to highly competitive universities and courses.

I provide personalised support to help students present their strengths, achievements, and ambitions clearly and authentically, ensuring their applications stand out whilst reflecting their individual voice.

A library of PowerPoint presentations I have carefully developed from trusted, referenced sources. These resources are designed to break down complex topics such as photosynthesis, respiration, genetics, and cell biology into clear, structured explanations that support independent study and revision.

The materials are available for purchase separately from tuition, making them suitable for any student who wants additional high-quality support outside of lessons.

As Head of Teaching and Learning, I created and implemented a highly successful 11+ preparation programme designed to develop the key skills and strategies needed for selective school entrance exams. This included targeted approaches to Verbal Reasoning (VR) and Non-Verbal Reasoning (NVR), helping pupils build confidence, accuracy, and exam technique.

Through personalised tuition and structured preparation, I have successfully supported many pupils in gaining places at the independent and grammar schools of their choice.

Several Grammar Schools now use the FSCE 11+ exam for the entry assessment. For more information click below

Revision Support

Students are supported in identifying the revision strategies that work best for their individual learning style through guided discussion, modelling, and structured feedback. This includes exploring various approaches, then trialling them in a targeted way to see what leads to the strongest retention and understanding. Pupils are shown how to use each strategy effectively, rather than simply being told what to do, and are supported in refining their approach over time. The aim is to develop independence so students can confidently select and apply the most effective revision techniques for different topics and exam demands..

  • “Palak was able to guide me and support me to answer the 3 questions on my UCAS a personal statement so it refelcted who I was and my passion, whilst also highlighting my skills and suitability for the course I had chosen. I am delighted to say that I have gained offers from all the Universities I applied to.” Year 13 Student 2025

—Year 12: Oliver applying to University to study Business Management

  • We’ve been incredibly grateful for the support and dedication our son has received from Mrs Heywood. From the very beginning, it was clear that she truly understands the challenges that come with dyslexia and approaches each session with patience, encouragement, and genuine care. What has stood out most is her ability to build our son’s confidence. Learning has not always come easily to him, but she creates a calm, positive environment where he feels safe to try, make mistakes, and improve. Over time, we’ve seen a real change—not just in his reading and writing skills, but in his attitude towards learning as a whole. Her lessons are well-structured, engaging, and tailored to his individual needs. Mrs Heywood clearly puts a lot of thought into how she teaches, using methods that really work for him. We’ve also appreciated the regular updates and feedback, which help us understand his progress and how best to support him at home. Thanks to her guidance, our son is making steady progress and, most importantly, starting to believe in himself. We couldn’t ask for a more supportive, knowledgeable, and committed tutor, and we would highly recommend her to any family looking for help with dyslexia.

—Year 6: Henry successful entry to Independent Secondary of choice.

  • "Palak has raised my daughter's confidence in a short space of time leading up to the A level exams. Her professional and friendly approach has helped her to fill the gaps in her knowledge and ensure that she is fully prepared for the demands of the exams. She listens to her worries and tailors sessions to her needs, helping her to answer questions that meet the exact requirements of the mark scheme. Her help has been invaluable in the preparation for A level exams."
