Frequently Asked Questions
What services do you offer?
I offer expert private tuition and educational support tailored to each student’s needs and goals. My core services include:
I offer GCSE and A-level Biology tuition, drawing on extensive teaching and examining experience across major exam boards to strengthen subject understanding and improve exam performance.
I also provide 11+ preparation, with a structured programme focusing on Verbal Reasoning (VR), Non-Verbal Reasoning (NVR), English, and Maths, designed to build both confidence and exam technique for selective school entry.
In addition, I support students with UCAS applications, including personal statements, course selection, and interview preparation, based on my experience as a Sixth Form Tutor and Assistant Head of Sixth Form.
Across all areas, my approach is personalised, structured, and focused on helping students achieve meaningful academic progress and reach their full potential.
How do I get started?
Getting started is straightforward.
The first step is to make initial contact so we can discuss the student’s current needs, goals, and the subject or area of support required. This may include academic targets, exam preparation, or university applications.
I will then recommend an appropriate plan of support, which may include an initial assessment session to identify strengths and areas for development. From there, I design a tailored tutoring approach to suit the individual student.
Once a schedule is agreed, sessions can begin immediately, either online or in person where available.
What makes you different?
What sets my tutoring apart is the depth and breadth of my experience across the full secondary and post-16 landscape. I have worked extensively as a classroom teacher and SLT, alongside experience as an examiner and course for major exam boards. This gives me a detailed understanding not only of subject content, but also of how marks are awarded and what examiners are really looking for.
My approach is highly personalised and strategic. I don’t rely on a one-size-fits-all method; instead, I diagnose individual strengths and gaps, then build a clear, structured pathway for improvement. This is combined with a strong focus on exam technique, confidence-building, and independent learning skills.
Whether supporting 11+ preparation, GCSE and A-level Biology, or UCAS applications, my focus is always on measurable progress, clarity of direction, and helping students achieve outcomes that reflect their true potential.
How do I know how my child is doing?
After each session, I provide a brief written report outlining what was covered, how your child performed, and the specific focus for the next lesson. This ensures you have clear, regular updates on progress without needing to wait for formal assessments.
I do not use lesson time for testing, as I believe this is best spent on teaching and development. However, I may occasionally set targeted assessments as independent work, particularly in the lead-up to exams. These are completed outside of lesson time and can be emailed back to me for marking.
Where this happens, you will receive detailed feedback so you can clearly see strengths, areas for improvement, and next steps.
Do you work with high achieving students?
Yes. I have extensive experience working in high-achieving and selective school environments, where expectations are consistently high and students are supported to reach top grades and beyond.
At A-level, I have achieved strong outcomes with cohorts reaching approximately 93% A*–B, reflecting a focus on stretch, challenge, and precise exam preparation. I have also supported individual students in making exceptional progress, in some cases improving by up to four grades, including progression from a U to an A grade through structured intervention and targeted support.
In addition, I have successfully prepared pupils for 11+ entry to a range of highly selective independent schools, including Eton, Westminster, Dauntsey’s, and Magdalen College School. My approach combines rigorous academic preparation with exam strategy and confidence-building to help high-achieving students maximise their potential.
Can you help if my child is lacking in confidence?
Yes. Supporting confidence is a key part of my approach, particularly where students are feeling uncertain, anxious, or disengaged.
Where appropriate, I use strategies such as pre-teaching or a flipped classroom approach. This involves introducing upcoming topics in advance so that your child is already familiar with key ideas before covering them in school, helping them to feel more secure and confident in lessons.
I also adapt lessons carefully to the individual, ensuring pace, structure, and challenge are appropriate to their needs. My experience includes working with young people who have experienced anxiety and other mental health-related challenges around learning and examinations, with a focus on building confidence and creating a calm, supportive learning environment.
What is your cancelation or rescheduling policy?
What is your cancellation or rescheduling policy?
A formal contract will be provided outlining full terms. I understand that circumstances can occasionally change, and I will always aim to be flexible and supportive where possible.
Where lessons need to be rescheduled, I will do my best to offer an alternative time. However, cancellations made within 48 hours of the scheduled lesson may still be subject to the full fee.
If you need to make any changes, please get in touch as soon as possible so we can work together to find the best solution.
How do you track progress?
How do you track progress?
I track progress using a range of formative assessment strategies embedded within lessons, rather than relying solely on formal testing. This allows me to build a clear and continuous picture of a student’s development over time.
Assessment focuses on key indicators such as the speed and accuracy of responses, the quality and depth of explanations, and the ability to recall and apply information effectively. I also monitor how well students make connections between topics, use subject-specific terminology appropriately, and apply their knowledge to unfamiliar or novel situations.
This ongoing, responsive approach ensures that teaching is continually adapted to address gaps, consolidate understanding, and extend learning, so that each student makes consistent and measurable progress.
